WWF Hosts Powerful Q&A at Soho House with Chef Tom Colicchio and A Place at the Table Filmmakers Lori Silverbush and Kristi Jacobson

On Tuesday night, May 7, the Woodstock Film Festival and sponsor 120db Films presented a screening of the powerful documentary A Place at the Table at Soho House NY. In attendance was executive producer and renowned chef Tom Colicchio (judge on Bravo's Top Chef and owner of Craft restaurants), and directors Lori Silverburg & Kristi Jacobson.

The film follows several Americans who don't know where their next meal is coming from while exploring the issue of poverty and hunger in America and the political steps we can take to end it.

Following the screening Colicchio, Silverbush and Jacobson participated in an passionate discussion and Q&A with the audience in attendance. Audience members wanted to know what they could to do to help end hunger considering the size of the problem confronting the country. The filmmakers number one message was to call your representative and tell everyone who you know to do the same.

Silverbush went on to say that a legislator to whom she spoke told her that when they receive just seven calls on an issue it makes them take notice, because for "every seven people who call about an issue there are thousands who aren't calling." She added, "Call them and let them know that you care about poverty and it will affect how you vote."

A reception followed the Q&A where the conversation continued while everyone enjoyed Ketel One cocktails or a glass of wine and tasty hors d'oeuvres.

The filmmakers were then off to Washington DC to screen A Place at the Table for several members of Congress.

Proceeds from the evening went to benefit the Woodstock Film Festival and the New York City Coalition Against Hunger.

Street Journeys Screening Moves Audience to Tears

This past Saturday afternoon, Woodstock filmmaker Tracy Christian moved a sold out audience to tears at Upstate Films Woodstock with the inspiring and heart felt story of her experience in Nairobi, Africa as told in her documentary: Street Journeys.

Tracy’s film brought to the surface a story from Africa that we as viewers do not often see; one of hope and positivity. Her documentary told the inspiring story of Anne Wanjugu and the former street children who found a glimmer of hope through all the negativity that surrounded them, with the power of theatre, music and performance.

Through the question and answer session that followed Street Journeys, the passionate Christian spoke about how the film fell into her hands, as she had no previous directing experience. The film was the outcome of her trip to Africa on safari and her inability to walk away from the Shangilia orphanage and “Mama Anne’s” “white light” 12 year’s ago.

The film brought out a passionate crowd, full of filmmakers, actors, and humanitarians who had the opportunity to share with Christian their gratitude towards showcasing such a beautiful and moving film. Audience members addressed Christian’s plans for the future with this film, and how a documentary such as Street Journeys could be very beneficial if seen by the right people (such as President Obama himself!)

Everyone was very curious about the amazing stories the director had covered in her documentary and how the children were doing. She was thrilled to disclose that these children have gone on to become remarkable people with a bright future. She held back tears when announcing that one of the boys in her film had gone on to go to law school. This moving moment solidified Tracy Christian’s obvious passion for Shangilia and “her kids”. To paraphrase Mama Anne's words in the film, "These children came from nowhere and had nothing, but look what they have done!"

HVPG Presents The Brass Teapot

Have you ever wanted something so much that you were willing to put all your faith in wishes? In The Brass Teapot, a young couple desperate to make ends meet get their hands on a teapot that they soon come to realize may possess the answers to all their financial problems; or so they think.

Go on give it a rub, I dare you.

The Brass Teapot, based on a story by director Ramaa Mosley and Tim Macy, remind us to be careful what we wish for. The film stars Juno Temple and Michael Angarano, as the married couple who are taken on the most unexpected journey of their life after stumbling upon this mysterious teapot at an antique shop.

This magical dark comedy is directed and brought to life by award-winning commercial and music video director Ramaa Mosley. This is Mosley’s directorial feature debut, however she is no stranger to film, having made her first film documentary at age 16. The Brass Teapot is set to be released by Magnolia Pictures on April 5.

However the Hudson Valley Programmers Group is excited to give Hudson Valley residents a sneak peek with the Hudson Valley premiere of The Brass Teapot, March 22nd at The Beacon Theatre and March 23rd at the Downing Film Center in Newburgh, both starting at 8pm. A question and answer session will follow both screenings with members of the cast and crew (TBD). The Downing Film Center will also hold a wine & cheese reception before the screening at 7:15 pm.

The picture was filmed with help from the Hudson Valley Film Commission and showcases our very own Hudson Valley region, with production locations in Beacon, Newburgh, Umbra of Newburgh, Kingston, and several other local towns.

WFF Presents Woodstock Filmmaker Tracy Christian and Her Film Street Journeys

Tracy Christian wasn't born in Woodstock, but since moving to the area in 2005 after her first son was born she's slipped right into the community. The filmmaker was born and raised in NYC and received an undergraduate degree in drama from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Now the Woodstock Film Festival will be presenting her documentary Street Journeys at Upstate Films Woodstock on March 2 at 2:30.

Street Journeys is the heartfelt story of Kenyan actress Anne Wanjugu who takes in street children in Nairobi and restores their sense of hope and spirit with the power of theatre. It's an emotional journey of faith, family and hope that "culminates in a triumphant journey from a makeshift stage at small Nairobi church to the bright lights of Broadway."

Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called the film "an exhilarating documentary that speaks to the nurturing power of art."

"I once heard someone say, 'When you see somebody rise, it reminds you that rising is possible,'" said Christian. "That was my experience with the street kids in Nairobi." Christian wanted to juxtapose the normally dire scenes from the African continent with a story that would put a smile on audiences faces. "This is a film about triumph over adversity, hope over despair," she noted. "We see the kids lift themselves up and we are lifted with them."

I've never met Christian in person, but from emailing with her back and forth one can tell she is full of hope and she truly cares for the kids in her film. What also comes across is her passion and drive to get the word out about these amazing kids.

"I am still in touch with all the children in my film," she said. "I like to say that they are my first kids."

The Shangilia Foundation, which is the US foundation supporting the orphanage, is seeking to raise $20,000 in 2013 to keep the performing arts program in Nairobi alive and well. Christian has become actively involved with the organization; sitting on the board.

Life of Pi Associate Producer Comes to Woodstock

Pondicherry of Woodstock will host a Q&A and Book Signing event with Life of Pi associate producer and the author of “Making of Life of Pi,” Jean-Christophe Castelli, at Fiber Flame Studio(1776 Rte 212 Saugerties, NY).

The event will be held in collaboration with The GoldenNotbeook to benefit the Woodstock Film Festival this Saturday February 9^th, from 5:30-7:00PM. Tickets are on sale for $15 and can be purchased here.

Castelli, a longtime associate of director Ang Lee and will be on hand for a special talk regarding anecdotes and the back story of the making of the film Life of Pi, as well as comment on the technical magical which went into making the film.

Life of Pi has garnered 11 Academy Award nominations and is Lee's most profitable film to date, grossing nearly 500 million dollars worldwide. The production did not come easily, taking four years as the book was long considered unfilmable. Lee is a Hudson Valley resident who spent time in Woodstock while shooting his previous film Taking Woodstock

WFF celebrates Oscar 2012

The 85th Academy Award nominations are out and there are several films with ties to the Woodstock Film Festival that earned nominations as well as a number of Hudson Valley residents and natives who will be vying for little golden men to display on their mantles.

Let's start in the shorts categories, where three films that screened at WFF 2012 grabbed nominations.

Mondays at Racine and Kings Point both were nominated for Best Documentary: Short Subject. The two films actually screened together as part of a program at WFF 2012.

Mondays at Racine

Mondays at Racine is directed by Hudson Valley resident Cynthia Wade who already has an Oscar on display on her mantlepiece for the 2007 short doc Freeheld, which also screened at WFF. She is a three time WFF alum also visiting Woodstock in 2010 with Born Sweet.

Her latest film is a moving film that "tells the story of two sisters who open their salon once a month to women diagnosed with cancer. As daughters themselves of a cancer victim, salon owners Rachel and Cynthia provide their community with haircuts, manicures, and pedicures, but also a safe haven for growth, healing, and discovery of inner strength. Wade not only focuses on the health and family struggles that cancer brings to its victims, but the symbolic strength and importance of a woman’s felt beauty that can be both lost and found. Mondays at Racine is an inspiration to those who are victims of cancer as well as those who are not, a beautifully told story of compassion and the will to overcome."

Kings Point, directed by Sari Gilman and produced by multiple year WFF alums Jedd and Todd Wider is the story of one retirement community in Florida and a portrait of some its residents.

That's a long hallway for old people to walk.

In the 1970s and 80s, hundreds of thousands of senior citizens migrated from New York City to Kings Point, a typical retirement community, located just outside West Palm Beach, Florida. Lured by blue skies, sunshine, palm trees, and the promise of a rich social life, they bought their way to paradise for just a $1,500 down payment. Now, as an aging community faces its own mortality, paradise has begun to exact a higher price. Through the experiences of six longtime residents, Kings Point captures both the allure and the darker complexities of living in a world where 'nobody gets too close. Poignant, funny and dark, Kings Point is a deeply empathetic portrait of the last act of the American Dream.

Moving to the Best Short Film: Live Action nomination we find one of my personal favorites- Wappingers Falls native Shawn Christensen's delightfully heartwarming and at the same time somewhat depressing- Curfew.

She may be nine, but she is going to whip him into shape

I laughed, I cried and you will too as deadbeat Richie has reached the end of his rope. At the lowest point of his life he is asked by his sister, as a last resort to babysit his precocious nine year old niece for an evening. The tike may just be the kick in the pants that Richie needs to reset a life on the edge.

Oh did I mention that Curfew won the Maverick Award for best Narrative Short? Should Curfew win the Academy Award, that will mark three years in a row that WFF has picked the Oscar winner for Best Live Action Short. The 2011 winner was God of Love by Luke Matheny and the 2012 Oscar went to Andrew Bowler's Time Freak.

In 2008 director Benh Zeitlin a Hudson Valley native brought his epic short film (yes a short film can really be epic, in fact it was even in a shorts category entitled "Epic Shorts") to the Woodstock Film Festival. The film won the Maverick Award for Best Narrative Short and well we knew that great things were ahead for Behn. Little did we know how great and how soon! Zeitlin wowed audiences and critics alike in 2012 with his gorgeous drama Beasts of the Southern Wild. Now that film, which made its breakthrough premiere at Sundance winning the Grand Jury Prize, has been nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture and two individual awards for Zeitlin (Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay). Best of luck to Behn and everyone associated with Beasts of the Southern Wild next month.

Two other WFF films grabbed Oscars nods:

John Hawkes gets snubbed

Best Song? That's It!?

Helen Hunt from The Sessions snagged a Best Supporting Actress nomination, while John Hawkes came up just short in his bid for another Oscar Nomination. Finally the brilliant documentary Chasing Ice, which was somehow left off of Oscar's noms for Best Feature Documentary did score a nomination in the Best Song Category for Before My Time.

She slept a summer by my side....well no.

Meanwhile Anne Hathaway a graduate of Vassar College is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her devastating performance in Les Miserables. She took home the Golden Globe for her portrayal of Fantine and just added a SAG Award to her collection (interesting that they are still just the SAG awards not the SAGAFTRA Awards). This is her second nomination, her first in the leading actress category for 2008's Rachel Getting Married, which was directed by 2012 WFF Maverick Award recipient Jonathan Demme. She is the odds on favorite to win.

Yes Ang we know you have an Oscar already.

Director Ang Lee's Life of Pi has been nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including a Best Director nod for Lee. It was the film they said couldn't be done. This is the Hudson Valley resident's 5th nomination, having been nominated for Best Picture and Director on Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and winning in 2006 for Brokeback Mountain (if you are adding he is also nominated for Best Picture for Life of Pi). Lee also shot his previous film Taking Woodstock in and around the Woodstock area. Speaking of Life of Pi come to this event to benefit the Woodstock Film Festival on February 9. Make sure you smile

Finally Mt. Vernon native Denzel Washington is nominated for his sixth Academy Award for Flight, he won way back in 1990 as Supporting Actor for Glory and then for Best Actor for 2002's Training Day. He has hasn't been back to the big dance since (can you imagine 10 whole years without a Denzel nom at the Oscars?). He's a big ole dark horse this year with that Daniel Day Lewis guy (a WFF alum by the way) also nominated for some old politician that was supposed to be pretty famous for some speech or something.

WFF Alums nominated for Golden Men!

The shorts categories were kind to WFF Alum as several more including the ones mentioned above picked up nominations.

Three time WFF alum animator PES is nominated for his first Academy Award for the Animated Short Fresh Guacamole. His WFF entries have included 2003's Roof Sex, 2008's Western Spaghetti and 2008's Deep.

Daniel Day prepping for Lincoln back in '05

Daniel Day Lewis turned out for a WFF Benefit screening with of his film Jack and Rose in March of 2005. Now he's nominated for his 100th Academy Award for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in...um what's it called...oh yes Lincoln. Ok well only his fifth nom, but really who's counting and this almost certainly will be win number three.

Daniel Day may have five nominations, but this next guy has six. Cinematographer Janusz Kaminski has won 2 Academy Awards and will be vying for his third after his nomination for Lincoln. Kaminski lensed the devastating French drama The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, which was an official selection of WFF 2007.

In 2004 WFF screened nominated director David O'Russel's short documentary Soldier's Pay. Now the filmmaker has been nominated for his second and third Academy Awards.

Inocente

Sean Fine and Andrea Nix have picked up their second Oscar nomination, for their short documentary Inocente. The film is the story of a fifteen year old undocumented, homeless immigrant who clings to her dream of becoming an artist despite the obstacles in front of her. The couple picked up two awards at the 2007 Woodstock Film Festival, winning the Audience Award for their feature documentary War/Dance as well as the Haskell Wexler Award for Best Cinematography. The film later went on to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary.

Open Heart

In 2008 director Kief Davidson came to WFF for the second time with his feature length documentary Kassim the Dream. His short Devil's Miner had been a hit at the 2005 festival. Now Davidson is nominated for his first Academy Award along with co-director Cori Sheppard Stern for Open Heart. The filmmakers followed eight Rwandan children with serious heart disease as they are taken for treatment to a hospital in the Sudan.

Those cans look heavy.

Jon Alpert's new documentary Redemption (along with co-director Matthew O'Neill) focuses on "canners" in New York City; those surviving on finding and recycling cans and bottles for the five cent redemption fee. Alpert served as executive producer on the 2005 Television Series Off to War, which had its feature episode World Premiere at WFF 2004. This is the second nomination for Alpert and O'Neill.

HVPG presents Dear Governor Cuomo, WFF 2012 Opening Night Film

The Hudson Valley Programmers Group will present Jon Bowermaster's anti-fracking documentary, Dear Governor Cuomo at a number of Hudson Valley theaters over the next month with the filmmaker in attendance along with special guests to be announced at some of the screenings.

This is dirty water I swear.

The first presentation will be a free screening (with $5 suggested donation) at the Seeling Theater on the campus of Sullivan County Community College, Tuesday November 13 at 7pm.

Dear Governor Cuomo features a look at the passionate anti-fracking event held in Albany earlier this year. As a unique coalition of musicians, scientists and filmmakers gathered on the governor’s front door step, calling for a ban on hydraulic-fracturing. With the news that Governor Andrew Cuomo might lift the moratorium on fracking in New York any day, the event was assembled in less than a month. Two rehearsals in twenty-four hours, and it was show time.

The goal of the extremely varied participants, many of whom had never met before this night, was to explain in clear terms the threats of fracking and to motivate people to rise up against the practice using song. The cord that bound them all was that they were first and foremost New Yorkers.

Under the musical direction of Natalie Merchant, the event was filmed by Academy Award-winning documentarian Alex Gibney. The film features actors Mark Ruffalo and Melissa Leo, environmental biologist Sandra Steingraber and musicians ranging from Joan Osborne and Citizen Cope to Medeski Martin and Wood and The Felice Brothers.

13th Annual WFF Wraps Up

That’s all, folks! The 13^th Annual Woodstock Film Festival wrapped up this past Sunday with the screenings of Amy Heckerling’s Vamps and Tom Donahue’s Casting By, drawing to a close five days of parties, panels, concerts and films here in Woodstock and the surrounding towns of Rhinebeck, Rosendale, Kingston and Saugerties.

And what a memorable five days it was! With 130 films and 53 premieres, the community turned out en masse to celebrate the independent spirit of filmmaking. This year’s festival saw films about subjects ranging from Real Dolls to car idling, from mariachi bands to yoga-practicing hipsters, providing such a variety of subjects and stories that it was impossible to not find something to watch.

Notable attendees included Jonathan Demme, Tim Blake Nelson, Timothy Hutton, Lori Singer, John Sloss, Bob Berney, Richard Abramowitz, Barbara Kopple, Peter Saraf and many others.

And the festival didn’t stop when the films stopped rolling! Woodstock’s own Colony Café saw night after night of stunning musical performances, from local favorite Simi Stone to electro-pop band The Pass, nighttime held a whole new host of activities for festival-goers.

The Opening Night Party at New World Home Cooking and the Friday Night Filmmakers’ Party at SPAF went well into the night, serving up on the house drinks from our sponsors Ketel One and Hendrick’s Gin. The unforgettable Lombard twins danced for the crowd Friday Night to a roaring applause, with Flannery Lunsford of Strutter and his band The Brandy Knights performing on stage for everyone present. Lindsey Webster attrached a crowd with her unique covers and the band Wine Teeth added the perfect musical backdrop as guests mingled.

Saturday night, of course, was especially memorable – the Maverick Awards Gala happened at Backstage Productions in Kingston, and it went flawlessly. California Solo received the Best Feature Narrative award, with Shepard and Dark winning Best Feature Documentary. Legendary Director Jonathan Demme received the Maverick Award to a live version of “Burning Down the House” by Paul Green and his Band of Monkeys, while the Meera Ghandi Giving Back award went to Tim Blake Nelson.

Even with the Gala over, there were still awards to be given out! The Audience Awards went to Travis Fine’s narrative Any Day Now, and Jonathan Kalafer’s touching documentary Once in a Lullaby: The PS22 Chorus Story.

WFF's annual Career Day took place at Onteora High School Friday, Oct. 12. To speak to the over 100 students that attended, actors Timothy Hutton and Lori Singer took the stage as well as directors Olivia Silver (Arcadia) and Arturo Pons (The Compass is Carried by the Dead Man). Students gained an insight into the film industry and were treated to a special screening of Arcadia.

We asked filmmakers, volunteer and staff to share their personal highlights from this year’s festival! Here are some of the answers we received:

"We drove up to Woodstock last Thursday to present Arcadia, truly looking forward to a weekend of fall weather and independent films. I woke up early the first morning after a long night of eating, drinking (maybe just a tad too much) and meeting interesting people at the opening night party. We headed over to Onteora High School to screen Arcadia as part of Career Day, but my plans to arrive on time were foiled by a bridge closing, with no obvious way to get across the creek. We were clearly no longer in NYC. Growing steadily more anxious as the clock ticked away, I finally realized that a small, dirt side road was actually not a dead end, unlike the sign proclaimed. I arrived just in time for the q&a to a packed house of high school students. They asked intelligent questions, which continued during the Career Day portion of the event: along with director Arturo Pons, editor Michael Taylor and others, we spoke about our half-crazy, half-liberating choices to devote years of our lives to making films. The students were engaged and inspiring themselves, explaining how they were already making films and video journals. They seemed to know approximately 10 times more than I did back in high school. Later that weekend we joined Arcadia DP Eric Lin and actress Kendall Toole for two more screenings, both to nearly sold-out audiences whose feedback and thoughtful questions showed how much they took the film to heart. It made the whole weekend thoroughly memorable, and made me hope to make another film partly just to have the chance to be invited to Woodstock again!"- Olivia Silver (Dir. of ARCADIA)

"One of my favorite things to do in the fall is to go up to the Woodstock Film Festival. The festival staff and volunteers are the perfect hosts. “I think maybe what was the highlight of the festival for me was just the atmosphere. Working on the press team had me all over the place, at movies and parties or in the office at Colony Café, and it was honestly an amazing experience to just be able to see how excited everyone was to be here at the festival. I was surprised at how down-to-earth everyone was despite being in such a demanding industry. The parties had me interacting with people I never in a million years would have imagined I’d meet – it was very cool.”- Samantha Yellin (Press Assistant)

It may have been frigidly cold outside last night, but in Backstage Productions in Kingston, the competition was heating up! Last night’s Maverick Award Gala was a flurry of activity as filmmakers gathered to find out who won the Woodstock Film Festival’s competition awards.

Hudson Whiskey and Barefoot Wine and Bubbly provided much-desired services last night, offering their delicious beverages for Gala-goers to enjoy during the ceremony. Sorella’s of Woodstock graciously offered the wardrobe for our lovely volunteer Meredith, who passed out the handcrafted Maverick Award trophies to their winners (which were handcrafted by local artisan Steve Heller of Fabulous Furniture). The ceremony was soundtracked by none other than Paul Green and his Band of Monkeys, who rocked out on stage to entrance and exit cues of famous movie and television soundtrack bits, anything from the Jaws theme to M.A.S.H.’s “Suicide is Painless.”

The much-anticipated award for Best Feature Narrative went to California Solo, directed by Marshall Lewy. The award was accepted by producer Mynette Louie. California Solo also took home the Editing award for Narrative Features. Honorable Mention went to Exit Elena, directed by Nathan Silver.

The award for Best Feature Documentary, also eagerly awaited, went to Shepard & Dark, directed by Treva Wurmfeld. The Honorable Mention went to Virgin Tales, directed by Mirjam von Arx.

What started out as a shift to a more somber mood quickly turned to a moment of warm reflection as a tribute to late indie-film executive Bingham Ray was played over the large screen, accompanied by emotional and heartfelt speeches by friends and companions.

Of course, the Maverick Award itself went to director Jonathan Demme (Stop Making Sense, Philadelphia), who delighted the crowd with a laugh-worthy speech regarding the actual definition of ‘maverick’ and whether he felt he deserved the title or not (we sure think so!).

The Meera Ghandi Giving Back award, presented by Meera Ghandi herself, went to veteran actor/director Tim Blake-Nelson, whose modest acceptance speech left everyone smiling.

The old renovated theater proved to be the perfect setting for the evening, as the stage was rigged up to display the official festival artwork as a backdrop for presenters such as Timothy Hutton, Signe Baumane and Barbara Kopple to give out awards to those the jurors felt most deserved them.

However, as festival director Meira Blaustein said during her welcome speech, no matter what, all of the films were winners.

Friday Night Filmmaker Party at SPAF

A special thanks to the Saugerties Performing Arts Factory, WFF Official Sponsor Ketel One, and the team of people that made our 13th Annual Friday night party a success! With the spacious art gallery as a backdrop, filmmakers, industry professionals, and guests filled the room while enjoying the eye-catching Ketel One ice sculptures.

The photobooth and step and repeat allowed partygoers to express themselves and really enjoy the night dedicated to celebrating the talent of this year's festival. Not to mention the live art performance by Ford Crull that took place in the building. Crull worked his magic on an enormous black canvas with colors of red, white and green splashed everywhere.

Lindsey Webster opened the night with her soulful voice and unique musical covers. As the night wore on, a special surprise performance from Free Expression's Lombard twins had guests gathered, and cameras out as they watched the brothers intense tap dance routine.

Here in the press corner, we've had several visitors! Flannery Lunsford, lead in narrative Strutter, stopped by for several photo ops, with everyone from the lovely ladies of Pretty Old to the press team itself, all before he heads on stage with his band the Brandy Knights for their performance this evening. Strutter is screening at Utopia Studios in Woodstock Sunday at 6:45pm!

Refuge actor and Actor's Dialogue panelist Brian Geraghty stopped by for a photo with Executive Director and co-founder Meira Blaustein. Geraghty's film Refuge, also starring Kristen Ritter, screens TONIGHT at Upstate Woodstock, 7pm and the Actor's Dialogue PANEL takes place Sunday morning, 10am at Mountain View Studio.

Guests took to the dance floor after food, drink, and mingling to bust a move. After last nights's festivities, tonight's Maverick Award Ceremony is sure to help filmmakers unwind and appreciate the talent gathered at the festival. Our team is hard at work at Back Stage Studio Productions in Kingston, transforming the venue into a party fit for Hollywood.

Live blogging from the Colony Cafe

It’s Friday afternoon, and that means the third day of this year’s Woodstock Film Festival is in full swing. But the fun certainly doesn’t stop when the sun sets! The Colony Café has been absolutely bustling today, and we’ve been delighted to meet so many of our wonderful filmmakers and stars already as they come to get their pictures taken and sit down for a chat with interviewers for our "Fiercely Independent Channel."

If you’re a filmmaker or actor and haven’t stopped by the press office yet, make sure you come on up, we’d love to meet you, get an interview and a photo op!

Earlier this afternoon we were honored to have this year’s Maverick Award winner Jonathan Demme hang out for a little bit, signing the official WFF poster and having his picture taken. Marco Antonio Orsini and Bilal Mekkaoui of Dinner at the No-Go’s were interviewed, as well as Brian Savelson of In Our Nature, Nathan Silver and his mother Cindy Silver, stars of Exit Elena, Sharon Greytak and Sally Kirkland from Archaeology of a Woman, Ned Thorne, director of 419 and Rasmus Dinesen of World’s Finest Chef.

Flannery Lunsford of Struttercame to visit as well, but if you missed him here, he’s set to perform at tonight’s Friday Night Filmmaker’s Party at the Saugerties Performing Arts Factory, along with his band The Brandy Knights! Local favorite Lindsey Webster, Wine Teeth and performance artist Ford Crull will all be adding their flair to the party. Live Blogging from Opening Night Party at New World

Here we are, live-blogging straight to you from New World Home Cooking for the Woodstock Film Festival’s Thursday Night Opening celebration! Countless volunteers, staff, and of course filmmakers and stars have come together to kick-off the 13th annual Woodstock Film Festival!

We came straight here from the World Premiere of Dear Governor Cuomo... which, considering it was completed on Friday and had not been seen by a wide audience, did not disappoint. Not only did the film receive a standing ovation, but the after concert and Q&A afterwards allowed everyone a deeper understanding of how serious the issue is. The post-film concert was enough to get their feet tapping and many of them singing along, as Natalie Merchant and accompanying musicians (including the ever-wonderful Simi Stone and Joan Osborne) performed for us everything from a shoe-tapping hoe down with Natalie's daughters, to a moving rendition of a song tailored for the anti-fracking theme of the night. And what’s more, who should join them on stage for their very first song but Congressman Maurice Hinchey, singing along and bringing to a close a wonderful premiere.

Meanwhile, here at New World, WFF Official Sponsor Hendrick’s Gin is flowing freely into glasses as the drink of the night as guests and filmmakers mingle and celebrate the festival season.

It’s only 10:32 here and things are certainly underway. Academy Award winner Melissa Leo is here, and graciously signed the 2012 Woodstock Film Festival poster. And she is not alone! Gil Holland from 2nd Servewas seen being photographed and interviewed at the WFF poster, Nathan Silver from Exit Elena introduced us to his lovely mother and co-star Cindy Silver, Pouria Heidary Oureh, director of An Sooye Bonbast is currently being interviewed and photographed, and the guest list doesn’t end there...Wei Ling Chang, director of The Unlikely Girl and Rasmus Dinesen, of The World’s Finest Chef have all stepped into New World.

The time is now 10:38, and the guests are still arriving! Recent arrivals include the Lombard twins, Martin and Facundo, who brought their short film Free Expression to our festival program, and Anton Verstakov, director of Rolan Makes Movies. With many more coming in every minute and the restaurant filling up, it certainly looks like we’re in for a memorable night!

One of the new additions is actress Melissa Leo who will be joining the FROM REEL TO REAL panel on Saturday 10/13 10am. Leo earned an Academy Award for her role as Alice Ward in the 2010 film, The Fighter. She is a long time Woodstock Film Festival supporter and was one of the “torch bearers” for the WFF 2012 trailer.

In addition, The MUSIC IN FILM panel, Saturday 10/13 2pm now has four new panelists! The panel, moderated by Doreen-Ringer Ross (Vice President of Film and TV Relations at BMI), will present a case study of the music from the Woodstock Film Festival official selection Vamps. The new panelists include Vamps director Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Look Who’s Talking, Clueless) composer David Kitay (Look Who’s Talking, Clueless, Can’t Hardly Wait, Scary Movie, Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle), producer Lauren Vesel (founding member of Lucky Monkey Pictures) and actress Mollie Israel (lead singer of NYC’s The Lost Patrol).

Brian Geraghty and John Pankow, will be joining the ACTORS DIALOGUE panel, Sunday 10/14 10am. Geraghty is a versatile actor best known for his roles in The Hurt Locker, Jarhead, and We Are Marshall. His recent films include Paramount's upcoming Robert Zemekis film Flight, and stars as Sam in the WFF feature Refuge. Pankow is best known for his role as Ira Buchman in Mad About You and most recently as Merc Lapidus in the TV series Episodes and most recently appearing Off-Broadway in Kenny Lonergan's Medieval Play at The Signature Theater. Pankow stars as Sid in the World Premiere of the WFF film Putzel. They join actress Sally Kirkland on the panel.

THE PASS will also be joining the Woodstock Film Festival at the colony on Friday night, October 12th, for a live and FREE concert. The Pass are an electro-pop band based in Louisville, Kentucky. Mixing elements of new wave, electro-pop and psychedelic rock with haunting melodies and dance floor ready beats, The Pass have created a sound entirely of their own. They also have scored the music for three films at this year's festival: 2nd Serve, California Solo and Art Machine.

A Trip Around the World at WFF 2012

The 13^th Annual Woodstock Film Festival, dedicated to celebrating the spirit of independent film and filmmakers, prides itself on the ever-diverse collection of films screened every year. Our World Cinema category consists of narratives, documentaries and shorts from the borders of the United States to across the sea. Check out our full schedule HERE.

Apartment in Athens (Appartamentoad Atene), directed by Ruggero Dipaola, is a stirring film coming all the way from Italy. World War II is in full swing, and the Helianos family is presented with the unsettling task of housing a German officer, an “honor” for which they are wholly unprepared.

"Rolan Makes Movies"

The Compass is Carried by the Dead Man (La Brujula Lleva El Muerto). Directed by Arturo Pons, is making its East Coast premiere during the festival. This film, hailing from Mexico, is the extraordinary story of Chencho, a small boy who desperately wants to be reunited with his brother in Chicago.

Rolan Makes Movies, directed by Anton Verstakov, comes all the way from the Russian Federation. At its core, Rolan Makes Movies is a film about the love of making movies. The documentary tells the story of Rolan, his video camera, and his dream of becoming a filmmaker, all in the heart of Siberia.

The World’s Finest Chef (TheVerdens Bedste Kok), directed by Rasmus Dinesen, is a world premiere straight from Denmark. Master chef Rasmus Kofoed has dreamed for eight years of winning the Bocuse d’Or, the individual world championship in fine gourmet cooking, and now he’s finally competing. The documentary follows the six months leading up to the competition, letting us see the drive and commitment of this 36-year old chef.

In addition to our outstanding narratives and documentaries, an abundance of World Cinema shorts are scheduled to be screened. Here’s a sneak peek at just a couple of them:

"Manila Running"

An Sooye Bonbast, directed by Pouria Heidary Oureh, comes from Iran, telling the story of a homeless man who becomes obsessed with a pair of shoes.

Manila Running, directed by Anuj Gulati, from Singapore, has its East Coast Premiere, about a man named Jacques who lands in the Philippines for an embarrassing operation, and things don’t go as expected.

Twenty Days Until WFF 2012! Have You Considered Volunteering?

WFF filmmakers gather at Libation in NYC Sept. 19

The anticipation for the 2012 Woodstock Film Festival is boiling over the edge, as we are less than three weeks away from Opening Night! The office is teeming with programs, packages of posters and of course, the FILMS. Yesterday, most of the team took a brief break from the frenzy to head to NYC for our annual launch party at Libation! It was a joy for us to finally meet (and be reacquainted with) the many wonderful filmmakers and sponsors over some drinks from WFF Official Sponsor, Kete l One.

In the meantime, our volunteer coordinator, Julia, stayed behind to work another long day at the Film Center, meeting with new and returning volunteers to find the best ways for everyone to contribute. If you’re looking for a unique way to become involved with the festival, maybe you should come in and speak with her as well! We’re looking for people to help in many departments at the festival - there’s something for everyone!

It is equally important to get in touch Julia if you’ve worked with us for years, or if this is your first time to consider volunteering. If you haven’t arranged plans to volunteers yet, we welcome you to attend our Volunteer Night at the Woodstock Playhouse this Sunday, September 23^rdat 4:00pm. We will be taking pictures for your badges and many department heads will be in attendance for you to become acquainted with. There will also be snacks and drinks!!

In the midst of total crunch time (only 27 days until Opening Night!!!), our Executive Director, Meira Blaustein, found herself not only in front of her computer, but also behind the camera. Despite the chaotic schedule, the four-day production for one of our 2012 trailers went off without a hitch.

The Olympic themed trailer featured some WFF famous faces running throughout participating towns carrying our “Olympic flame,” otherwise known as the Maverick Award, to the Woodstock Film Festival headquarters. Enthusiastic crowds of extras came out to Kingston, Rosendale, Rhinebeck and Woodstock to take advantage of the opportunity to be seen up on the big screen.

Torch carriers included Melissa Leo, Michael Lang, Edward Crawford, Barbara Sicuranza and Jason Downs (with appearance by the aspiring young filmmaker / actress Jesse Bongiorno). BCDF Pictures graciously provided a talented team to produce the trailer and that team is currently working on the postproduction work along with editor Jordan Matthews. Then the footage is off to our musical coordinator, Paul Green who, along with a few local musicians, is composing and recording the sound track before returning to the office to be integrated into the festival! You’ll be able to see the trailer online, as well as on rotation before many of the films and in the box office.

Detropia Screens at NY IFC Center

Long-time friends and jurors and panelists at this years Woodstock Film festival, Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, have recently completed Detropia, a spellbinding documentary about Detroit City and its struggle to transform itself into a new and innovative place. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2012, and won the Editing Award for Documentary.

In Detropia, Both Ewing and Grady follow a diversified selection of subjects, which gives the audience a sense of a potent mix of firsthand observation and surreal flights of fancy. Heidi and Rachel find vibrant signs of life from the union halls and nightclubs, throughout abandoned factories, and to the Detroit opera house.

Praised by Variety as "A potent snapshot of a potential future for many American cities," Detropia paints a frightening picture of the city of Detroit in economic dismay.

Detropia made its opening at New York's IFC Center Sept. 6 and will continue its screenings at the center until Wednesday Sept. 12. The documentary will then continue its screening tour across the US through November, including multiple screenings in Detroit and the Michigan area. Ewing and Grady previously co-directed The Boys of Baraka, the critically acclaimed documentary feature that was released by ThinkFilm in 2005, which also won the 2006 NAACP award for Outstanding Independent Film. One of their recent feature documentaries, Jesus Camp was also nominated for an Academy Award and aired on television worldwide.

Ewing and Grady have been featured in Time Magazine as innovators of the documentary craft. Both are members of the Directors Guild of America as well as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. As well, they are the co-founders of Loki Films, a non-fiction film production company founded in 2001.

WFF's Olympic-style trailer set to shoot in local towns

In the year 2000, the Woodstock Film Festival was a fledgling event, striving to present the true spirit of independent film to our area. And now, 13 years later, and after Indiewire has named it one of the Top 50 Film Fests worldwide, it’s gearing up to do it once again.

The 13^thannual Woodstock Film Festival will be presented October 10-14^th, 2012. Before that time, we have a lot to do, and this year we have a job for you!

The festival, which works to embody the spirit and creativity of the Woodstock Arts Colony, is spread across Kingston, Rhinebeck, Rosendale and Woodstock. Dozens of films are scheduled to be screened throughout these locations, and the WFF has decided it’s time to highlight this fact by filming a trailer that encompasses each of these unique locations, and the wonderful people in them.

The trailer itself is inspired in part by the recent Olympic Games. The WFF Maverick Award Trophy, an award that celebrates all aspects of the spirit of independent filmmaking, is to be carried by notable members of the community, such as Oscar®-winning actress Melissa Leo (The Fighter). However, instead of making them run from Oxford to Camden to London, we’ll be saving some money on plane tickets. Our runners will travel through all the locales of the Woodstock Film Festival, bearing the trophy proudly.

So where do you come in?

We need extras! That’s right, the WFF needs members of the community to come cheer our runners on. Have you ever wanted to be on the screen? Now’s your chance – the trailer will be shown in rotation before the films during the festival, as well as online. It’s your time to shine!

Interested community members should plan to show up at the following locations and times. Every extra is encouraged to attend the after-party following the filming of the trailer, so get ready to have a good time! The trailer would not be possible without the support of the Ulster County Development Corps, and the aid and cooperation of the municipalities of Kingston, Rhinebeck, Rosendale, Woodstock, and all their respective Chambers of Commerce. It is being produced in collaboration with BCDF Pictures (Higher Ground, Peace, Love & Misunderstanding, Why Stop Now and the upcoming Liberal Arts and Bachelorette). The trailer was conceived and directed by Meira Blaustein, festival co-founder and executive director, with music supervision by WFF music director Paul Green (of School of Rock fame). The WFF Maverick Award is handcrafted by local artisan Steve Heller of Fabulous Furniture, Boiceville, NY.

Indie film fans gathered at Upstate Films in Woodstock this past Saturday afternoon for the opportunity to see the one-time Woodstock screening of “For Ellen,” directed by So Yong Kim and starring Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood).

Dano’s superb acting drove the film, as he was in virtually every scene of the movie. He brilliantly displayed the deep angst and personality of his character, Joby, with a truly compelling performance and convincing facial expressions. During the Q&A, one audience member mentioned Kim’s use of many close-ups of Dano. Kim explained it was not only a style preference of her own, but also a great tool to lead the audience to feel the emotions that Dano portrayed on camera.

Naturally, much of the Q&A with Kim, Dano and our executive director Meira Blaustein dealt with the emotion that was brought out of the audience. Moviegoers were torn between feelings of resent toward the self-centered lead and empathy for him, a young man who despite his mistakes, longs to be a part of his young daughter’s life.

Dano was spotted in the lobby of Upstate Films humbly playing and joking with children. This led one Q&A participator to ask how he was able to prepare for a part that was so removed from his actual personality. Dano stated that he spent time studying rock stars, such as Slash, that he believed Joby would have idolized.

Kim explained that the concept for the film came from her past, having had a long lost father return into her life one day, just as Joby had. The “For Ellen” team struck gold with the young girl who played Joby’s daughter. Rather than holding casting calls, Kim discovered the girl at a local school in Upstate NY where the feature was filmed.

Adding to the dark tones of the film, Kim envisioned the film taking place in a snowy winter setting. This requirement led the production team to Upstate NY, where it is notorious for its snowfall.

In all, it was an enjoyable afternoon for everyone who attended. If you were not able to join us last weekend, “For Ellen” will be screening at the Film Forum in NYC and has gained distribution through Tribeca Film. The movie is also set to be On Demand, where one can become immersed in this engaging film from the comfort of one’s home! - Bridget Dawson

Special screening of "FOR ELLEN" with guest Paul Dano

Paul Dano, star of the 2006 hit Little Miss Sunshine as well as Academy Award winning There Will Be Blood and the new film Ruby Sparks, is coming to Woodstock! Dano will be in attendance for WFF's special screening of the indie film For Ellen.

The one-time screening will take place at Upstate Films in Woodstock August 18 at 3pm. Joining Dano for a special Q&A afterwards will be writer/director So Yong Kim as well as producer Jen Gatien.

"This film has been on our radar for awhile now," says WFF executive director and co-founder Meira Blaustein. "Dano is brilliant and Kim has an amazing way of getting the audience involved in more than just the story. When you see the film, you somehow become a part of the fabric by investing your own emotions."

Aspiring rock star Joby Taylor (Paul Dano) has wanted nothing more than to “make it”, having flirted with fame but never crossed over into true success. In the midst of a low period in his life, he agrees to sign divorce papers with his estranged wife (Margarita Levieva- “Revenge,” “How To Make It In America”) in order to see money from the sale of their home, only to discover that by signing the papers, he will forfeit all custody of his six-year-old daughter, Ellen (newcomer Shaylena Mandigo). With a good-natured lawyer (Jon Heder, NAPOLEON DYNAMITE) unable to make headway in reversing the decision, and a girlfriend (Jena Malone, INTO THE WILD) that represents an era of his life that he might be ready to graduate from, Joby negotiates a visit with his daughter to explore whether he is able to walk away from his child, and whether it might be too late for reconciliation.

For Ellen stems from Kim’s desire to understand her own father and an imagined confrontation if he ever returned to her. Using the stark beauty and vast farmlands of an American winter as its backdrop, the film charts Joby’s emotional journey as he realizes what he has lost—and what, if anything, can still be saved. East Coast Premiere of Why Stop Now at Byrdcliffe

This past weekend was quite the sight in Woodstock. In addition to the regular weekenders, artists, performers and ticket holders for the first annual Byrdcliffe Festival of the Arts descended upon various venues in the area.

As part of this gathering of outstanding talent, the Woodstock Film Festival screened the East Coast premiere of the Sundance 2012 Official Selection Why Stop Now. Written and directed by Woodstock native Phil Dorling and founding advisory board member Ron Nyswaner, the film showed at Upstate Films to a packed house.

Ticketholders and non-ticketholders alike arrived early to claim their seats and by 1:30 pm, WFF executive director Meira Blaustein was on stage introducing the film and announcing the special Q&A afterwards with Dorling and BCDF Pictures producer Claude Dal Farra.

The film drew big laughs at all the right moments and a few tears at others. Why Stop Now stars local resident and Academy Award winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Academy Award nominee Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) and Emmy Award nominated Tracy Morgan (30 Rock).

Also in attendance was French high wire artist Philippe Petit, famous for his walk across the World Trade Center towers and partner Kathy O'Donnell.

The Q&A afterwards allowed Dorling and Dal Farra to talk about their work on the feature as well as what's in store next for each. Dorling, a first time director, talked about the work process with actors in the caliber of Leo, Eisenberg and Morgan, emphasizing the dramatic role Morgan, a regular comedic actor, took on for his film. He also spoke of the many lessons he learned along the way from veterans such as Leo and his partner on the film, Ron Nyswaner.

"Everyday is a constant wheel turning," Dorling remarked when asked how life was after completing his first feature. "There's always something new to deal with!"

Dal Farra talked about the impetus for taking on the project and the upcoming films from his local company BCDF Pictures that will be shot in the region as well as in Europe and other parts of the U.S.

"I am thrilled to have been able to give this platform for so many wonderful local (and not local) filmmakers and actors,"said Blaustein. "It was great to see someone who began his career as a volunteer at the Woodstock Film Festival (Dorling) as well as one who has been on our advisory board since its inception (Nyswaner) shine. I wish the film and everyone involved much success now and with all their future projects."

The film is currently on VOD and will be coming to theaters this August.

HVPG Presents Inside the Perfect Circle: The Odyssey of Joel Thome

Join us on Saturday, August 11^th and Sunday the 12^th for special screenings of the award-winning documentary, Inside the Perfect Circle: the Odyssey of Joel Thome. Directed by Chris Pepino, the film will show at Rosendale Theatre on Saturday and Upstate Films Woodstock on Sunday. The intriguing documentary gives insight into the life and career of the renowned musician.

Thome is a Grammy Award winning composer and Pulitzer Prize nominee who is best known for his critically-acclaimed arrangements of Frank Zappa’s musical stylings. After suffering a debilitating stroke in 1998, Thome had to go through years of recovery to regain the use of his left arm. The film follows his recovery and subsequent return to the stage. Featuring interviews with colleagues, musicians, and performers, as well as archival and performance footage, the documentary gives an in-depth look at the creative genius and unwavering dedication of the modern composer.

Mr. Thome will be attending both screenings, and will participate in a Q&A after each show. Following the Saturday screening in Rosendale, there will be a short musical performance as well as a reception, for an extra cost.
